Kalambaka

rain 6 °C

Our third day started with a 5hour train jurney from Athens to Kalambaka (metiora monistries) which started at 8.20 in the morning and arrived here about half 1, the train was very full so for the first while we had to sit in the luggage compartment. we then got seats miles away from each other and while oli was talking to a woman that was studying biochemisty in athens who spoke english, i was watching a man with no teeth eat loads and loads of buiscuits. and for breakfast on the train we made pitta bread with sweetcorn and philidephia and crisps. Munch!
the train terminated in kalambaka where we cooked our lunch on the platform which consisted of pasta sweetcorn and philidephia and crisps. Munch!
we then set off into the hills to find somewhere to camp, we found the most amaizing cave in one of the many clif faces. we left our stuff in the cave and went into town to buy more food and water and beer. On the way back to the cave the heavens opened and the rain fell. heavy!!!! so we were very glad to get back to the nice dry shelter.
in the cave we lit a fire and jammed out for time, cooking on the stove and listening to donn letts (reggae). The firewood ran out around ten so we made a litre of coffe and hit our bivvys, for a surprisingly comfortable nights sleep big thanks to alpkit.com for out sleeping mats and army surplus is kensington gardens.

YESYES

day2 --Athens

Half way through last night we felt kinda hungry so we set off into the night on some fat mission to try and find any shop that was open. We only managed a pack of breadsticks and some horrible chocolate biscuits and we learnt that food is not easily found late on asunday night in Athens.

Yesterday from the Parthenon we looked out over Athens and the only other raised part of the city was what we thought was a church on top of a massive hill, so today we set out to reach the top. Unfortunatly we didnt quite make it to the top, as we got distracted but I think we probably walked nearly everywhere else. We walked to the Olympic stadium, set ed's camera on timer, jumped the prohibited area barrier and just about got in the picture. Several asian people thought this was very funnny and was probably the highlight of their "cattle herding" Athens tour.
Tonight its pasta and chopped tomatoes for dinner cooked on eds petrol stove on our balcony.

Tomorrow we are off at 8.20am to kalambaka and the meteora monastries, which is a five hour train journey.

The Start

the first day

sunny 15 °C

Today we started ou adventure by flying to Athens from the UK. The flight started a bit jerkily, with some heavy turbulance, but soon levelled off for a trouble free 4 hour flight. Once we had arrived in Athens airport it was a swift 1 hour metro trip to our hostel, where luckely we were upgraded to a near-by hotel, which was a nice way to start our trip. The hostle itself is pretty crap with an inhospitable reception man and poor hygeine, but its ok for us because we get a nice hotel room just round the corner, as i type this there is someone being alicated to the spare bed in our room. we went to see the pathanon(sp) today, its pretty amazing but covered in scaffolding atm which kind of takes away from its spleder. we have eaten some nice food but spent too much money on it as we couldnt shop for grossaries, we had to eat in cafes.
i will try to put some pictures on here now...
